A Collective Wisdom, Collective Justice™ residency unfolds over several days rather than a single hour. A keynote reaches a room once. A residency creates multiple points of engagement, allowing students to move from public dialogue to smaller workshops, reflection, and mentoring while helping the campus build momentum that continues after the residency ends.

Collective Wisdom, Collective Justice™ draws on lessons from the Civil Rights Movement, traditions of community dialogue, and leadership practices grounded in listening, reflection, and shared responsibility.
Centered Leadership is its foundation: remaining grounded in your values while listening deeply, learning from others, and acting with integrity in moments of uncertainty.

Leadership begins with listening to the knowledge, experience, and aspirations already present in a community.
Collective Reflection
Shared reflection helps people examine assumptions, clarify values, and deepen their understanding of complex challenges.
Cultural Connection
Music, storytelling, ritual, and other cultural traditions remind us that leadership and social change are deeply human experiences.

Who we partner with
Residencies are built with the offices that carry this work day to day. Programming can span several campus partners so no single office is left holding it alone.
Potential partners include: civic engagement centers, student affairs, academic departments, leadership programs, senior administration, social justice programs, and community engagement offices.

No two campuses are the same, and no two CWCJ residencies are the same. We work with campus partners to understand their students, institutional priorities, existing programs, and community context, then build a residency around what will be most useful there.

Cultural
Grounding
A residency begins with experiences that invite students into community, reflection, and cultural connection. Music, dialogue, storytelling, and other culturally grounded experiences can help create the openness and trust that support the rest of the week.
Dialogue & reflection
Student Leadership
Workshops
Smaller, structured sessions give students space to examine their own leadership, values, and civic engagement. Through reflection, peer learning, and practical application, participants begin connecting personal insight to how they lead.
Intensive leadership development
The Keynote
Positioned later in the residency rather than first, the keynote brings together themes participants have already begun exploring. It introduces or deepens the Collective Wisdom, Collective Justice™ framework and connects leadership, justice, civic engagement, and community responsibility.

Smaller conversations and one-on-one mentoring give students space to process what they have experienced and consider how to apply it in their own leadership and community work.

Leadership Coaching for
Center & Program Leaders
A one-time, 90-minute individualized coaching session for a center or program leader. A brief pre-reflection helps focus the conversation on current leadership opportunities, institutional realities, and professional growth.

Kalamazoo College:
the model in practice
In April 2026, Sandra Barnhill led a Collective Wisdom, Collective Justice™ residency at Kalamazoo College. Across nine engagements, students, faculty, staff, senior administrators, and community members participated in conversations and learning experiences focused on leadership, justice, civic engagement, and community.
Programming involved three campus centers, with the President, Provost, Dean of Students, and Football Coach participating directly. Two center directors also received individual leadership coaching. Students returned for multiple events, stayed afterward to continue conversations, and several requested mentoring after the residency ended.
The residency also received coverage from Kalamazoo television, the student newspaper, and Rolling Out.
